Nel testo più antico non c'è un ordine separato per le mogli: il versetto 22 non ha alcun verbo; si appoggia al versetto 21, dove tutti si sottomettono a tutti. Si aggiunge un nuovo imperativo e 'Mogli, sottomettetevi' diventa una regola a sé — la reciprocità sparita in silenzio. Il versetto più letto ai matrimoni, fondato su una sola parola inserita.
