What the source reads — ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ — 'in Hades', the neutral abode of all the dead (the grave, not yet the furnace)
What this version reads — 'in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments' — the KJV reads the underworld as the place of fiery punishment
The rich man and Lazarus is the single passage that built the popular picture of hell — flames, torment, the great gulf fixed. But the Greek word is Hades, the shadowy abode where everyone went; the fire and the geography are the parable's imagery, not a map. Rendered 'hell', a story about wealth and indifference became the West's field-guide to the afterlife.
