Psalm 16:10 — What Changed in the Bible Text

Translation choice · documented · Afterlife

What the source readsSheol — the grave, the silent realm where all the dead go, good and bad alike (Diodati: 'sepolcro')

What this version reads'hell' — the KJV renders the neutral grave as the place of the damned

Sheol is the Hebrew underworld — the grave, where everyone goes, with no fire and no judgment. The KJV translates it 'hell' here and across the Old Testament, retrofitting a place of punishment into a book that doesn't have one yet. Diodati keeps the honest 'sepolcro' — the grave.
