What this version reads — ipsa conteret caput tuum — SHE shall crush your head
The Hebrew pronoun is masculine ('he', the seed). The Vulgate reads ipsa — 'she' — turning the verse toward Mary, the woman who crushes the serpent. Centuries of Marian art and doctrine rest on this pronoun; Martini's Italian inherited it ('Ella schiaccerà').
