Genesis 3:20 — “Eve” means Life

Adam names her Chavvah — “because she was the mother of all living.” The name is the Hebrew word for life. The Greek translators heard that and wrote the meaning out plainly: they named her Ζωή — Zoe, “Life.” The Latin, English and Italian just copied the sound instead — Heva, Eve, Eva — so the sinner’s name everyone knows quietly buried the fact that her name is Life itself, the mother of all the living.
